Recording the same scene several times is a good idea as you’ll have several to choose from.This doesn’t mean that you have to do 50 takes of each scene. Two or three times should be good enough to avoid any unwanted surprises when it comes to editing.Of course, if you’re filming a documentary or a holiday video, several takes mightn’t be possible. You don’t want to ruin the spontaneity. In fact, different angles can bring something new to a scene. This is as important as it is with photography as it can be tricky doing travelling shots. Different angles can add dynamism to a scene. Can video games help students learn?SchoolsMany parents would say that their children spend far too much time playing computer games, and might wish they had as much enthusiasm for their studies as they have for gaming. But what if video games were an actual school subject, and were treated as seriously as drama, sports, or the arts? This is not so unlikely as it initially appears - Singapore has recently opened numerous training classes, where students can learn advanced strategies and skills in certain games. Japan and South Korea also have training classes for students wishing to learn from seasoned professionals. This is in preparation for huge competitions akin to video games sports events - viewed by millions of fans across the world. The new term for this rapidly growing activity is e-sports - and before you write it off as a group of social misfits playing games in a darkened room, you should consider that the market forecast for this new pastime is set to exceed $1.5 billion USD within the next three years. The pioneer in the e-sports field has always been South Korea. `Pro-gaming` tournaments are regularly broadcast, and attract millions of viewers to the live games. Considered a national pastime, it is not unusual for viewing figures to exceed 10 million, and the world`s first e-sports stadium was built in Seoul in 2005. With major tech companies such as Samsung and HTC getting involved in sponsorship and training, the e-sports industry is thriving. Can playing video games actually be beneficial though? Do they teach any particular skills that can`t be learnt elsewhere; and might excessive playing have a deleterious effect on an individual`s health? Scot Osterweil is a research developer in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology`s Comparative Media Studies program, along with creating Education Arcade, a system designed to explore how video games can engender learning. Early findings suggest that, besides definite gains in reflexes and eyesight, students may benefit from abstract cognitive thinking by playing certain games. Many video games require extensive 3D manipulation, and this sort of puzzle solving with complex shapes can help the developing mind in abstract areas, such as topology, a branch of mathematics that deals with shapes. Prof Daphne Raveller, working at the University of Geneva, has conducted extensive studies, focusing on the visual abilities of those who play video games vs those who do not. Her tests require participants to track a group of smiling and frowning emoji type faces, as they move around a bounded area. The studies have shown that gamers (especially those who play action games) have a far higher ability to track multiple moving objects; and her theory is that these gamers have developed skills in attending to multiple sprites through the playing of video games. Prof Simone Kuhn, working at the Max-Planck Institute of Human Development in Berlin, made functional MRI scans of subjects playing Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo DS. Over just a short period of three months she discovered that three areas of the brain, the right hippocampus, the prefrontal cortex, and cerebellum, had grown. These areas are thought to be concerned with fine motor control. Prof Kuhn has hypothesised that the particular navigational aspects of the game, which feature a 3D playing area, along with a 2D map, require different levels of spatial thought, which encourage brain development. An unexpected educational benefit of video games could be what they offer to the training of medical surgeons. Dr Hoedemaker is a keyhole surgeon, and he has helped design a popular game called Underground. Playing this game requires the use an innovative controller: two gun shaped devices, each possessing long steel bars extending from their muzzles, which terminate in the base of the unit. This device mimics the two tools keyhole surgeons use, and the doctor actually uses the game to help train his medical team. Despite these numerous interesting accounts of the benefits of video games, it is unlikely that picking up a joystick and blasting away some nefarious alien invaders will soon become a core part of the educational curriculum. The idea that video games are a lazy pursuit though, with people barely thinking while playing, seems to be a huge misconception. Many games require huge levels of skill - and they don`t just demand lightening quick reflexes, but also call for imaginative and demanding solutions in order to be completed. GATE Testing GATE TESTING: What is it all about? GATE stands for Gifted and Talented Education. The definitions for gifted, now gifted and talented, have changed vastly over time. First it was determined solely by an IQ (Intelligence Quotient) test, and then it was based on certain levels of achievement. Some children are highly gifted in one subject, yet score in the mid range for other subjects. What it really comes down to for parents in Orange County is what the school district considers to be gifted and talented. Let’s take a look at what Irvine Unified has to say: To be “identified” as GATE, a student must meet ONE of the following: Score 500 or above in math AND 500 or above in ELA (English Language Arts) on the CST (California Standards Test) Score 95% or higher on the (OLSAT) Otis Lennon School Ability Test. This is given to students in grades 3-6 in the winter months and is also given to middle school students in the summer. Qualify (number TBD) from the results of an IQ test administered by a licensed educational psychologist. Is Your Child Right for GATE? Now that this has been cleared up, let’s figure out if GATE is right for your child. There are some signs that your little one might be gifted: S/he exhibits creative abilities S/he has an excellent memory S/he has a refined sense of humor S/he is highly curious about the world around them S/he has an advanced vocabulary for their age group and uses these words appropriately and in context Advanced language skills The ability to read earlier; starting to read before entering school S/he asks TONS of questions and is only satisfied with complex and thorough answers. The ability to carry out complicated instructions that contain several steps They may insist on figuring things out for themselves when it comes to learning a new task There is more than one type of gifted It is important to remember that there is more than one type of gifted. Some children are gifted in a specific academic subject. For example, I might work with a child who is a math whiz but is classified as typical in ELA. This can be very frustrating for the child because they don’t understand why ELA doesn’t come to them as easily as math. I may also work with a student who is a music virtuoso but doesn’t know how to organize their class work. Some students are gifted socially-they have an in-depth understanding of empathy and natural consequences- but are perhaps average in academic subjects. Other students understand academic subjects with little to no help but struggle socially. With so many different ways a child can be gifted, it is a challenging task for a parent to identify if their child is gifted. This is probably why there are three ways a child can be identified as gifted, instead of just one. It is also important to remember that gifted children often don’t receive high grades if left in a traditional classroom. It is a good idea to ask your local school to test your child if you believe your little one is gifted so that they can be placed in the appropriate classroom. (Gifted children need private tutors too; it helps them develop and refine their skills) Testing for gifted students I mentioned earlier that there are currently three tests for giftedness. The CST, the OLSAT, and an IQ test. Let’s look at those a little closer. The CST covers topics such as word analysis, reading comprehension and writing strategies as well as probability, data analysis, and algebra functions. The OLSAT is an abstract thinking and reasoning test. It looks at spatial reasoning and verbal ability. An IQ test is administered privately by an educational psychologist and measures a child’s potential. All standardized tests have received both praise and criticism by current and past scholars. Tips from an Irvine Tutor Youre Using Flashcards Wrong Studying with Flashcards: Why you’re doing it wrong Studying with Flashcards: Why you’re doing it wrong Flashcards are a quintessential tool for students looking to memorize a significant amount of material in a short amount of time. Whether it’s for vocabulary words, parts of a cell, or trigonometric derivatives, flash cards are used by students everywhere to learn the material and pass an exam book your private Irvine tutor for finals. And using flashcards is an incredibly effective study strategy â€" if they are used correctly and with purpose. For such a ubiquitous and straightforward tool, it’s surprising how few students are taught how to use flashcards. Consequently, flashcards tend to be misused and misunderstood. If you are using flashcards, keep reading to make sure that you are getting the most out of your studying. Looking and Flipping The least effective, yet most pervasive, flashcard strategy is to just read them like you would read anything else. Students will look at one side, flip it over and read the next side, then move on to the next card. They’ll go through their whole deck this way â€" essentially just read the list of things they should know. Sure, you might learn your words this way just by reading them over and over, but there are better ways. The Right Way Instead of just looking and flipping, the process should be more like this: Look, think, test yourself, then flip. One of the main benefits of flashcards is that they allow you to test yourself. Look at one side of the card, then see if you know the other side before you flip it. Think of the answer, say it out loud, or write it down. I recommend doing all three to make sure you really know the material. Do not just read through the cards and flip through them without testing your knowledge. Keeping the deck unchanged Once the deck of flashcards is made, many students just stick with it. They go through the same deck, start to finish until they feel like they know all of the cards. This method is very time consuming and not conducive to really learning the terms you are studying. The Right Way Separate the deck into two piles as you study. You should be testing yourself before you flip the card; if you know the other side of the card correctly, then put it in one pile â€" if not, then put it in a second pile. Even if you got the answer partly correct, put it in the second pile. This will create two decks for you: one with cards you know, and one with cards you don’t. Focus your studying on the “don’t know” cards, putting the ones you master into the “know” pile until the “don’t know” deck is empty. Then, shuffle all of the cards together and go through the whole deck again. Make sure you still know all of the cards even when they’re all together and shuffled. Studying this way will prevent you from having to go through the whole deck every time instead of focusing on what you need to learn. Only Using Words and Definitions Many students think flashcards can only be used for learning vocabulary words, key terms, or other simple concepts with definitions. This leads to simple flashcard decks with dictionary definitions that might not be best preparing you for your test. The Right Way Flashcards can be used for so much more than just vocabulary! You can use flashcards for pictures, for example, problems for equations, and more. Anything that you need to have memorized you can consider using a flash card (READ: OC Tutoring Tips: Four Tips for a Better Study Session). For classes where you need to know diagrams or identify pictures, consider drawing/printing what you need to know on one side of the flashcard. For complicated diagrams, processes, or pictures (anything that you’ll have to label/identify several parts in the same image) you can have multiple flashcards with the same picture but different “blanks” that you have to fill in. This way you can memorize complex concepts without being overwhelmed. You can use flashcards in math or equation-based subjects, too. Equations that need to be memorized can be flashcards. You can also use example problems and their solutions for complicated problems. For the solutions, considering numbering the steps to get to the answer. When you study with the cards, you can test yourself on what the steps to the solution are. Now if you see a similar problem later, you will know how to approach it. Other Common Mistakes and Solutions Sometimes, students will use flashcards in a way similar to a PowerPoint presentation: a title or heading on one side and a list of bullet points on the other. While this isn’t a bad way to write and organize your notes, it isn’t an optimal way to study the information on the card. Break up your larger flashcards into smaller facts and associations if you can. This will make the information more digestible and easier to test yourself on when you’re studying. Paraphrasing and putting things in your own words are good practices in this process as well. Another common study mistake that students make is studying in only one direction. That is, they’ll always look at side “A” and test themselves by flipping to side “B.” You should always be trying to learn your terms and recognize associations in both directions when possible. A Final Mistake The final mistake is not having variety in your flashcard decks. Many students will make their own flashcards and use dictionary definitions or textbook syntax to memorize. Other students will exclusively use pre-made flashcards online or on apps on their phone. In both cases, you want to be able to write flashcards in your own words to promote your understanding. It is good to use other decks in combination with your own to have a more well-rounded understanding. Flashcards are a valuable tool that can help you memorize and study for virtually any subject.
